The Day After

Feeling of slow motion fall
through northwest November rain
as the world I thought I knew
passes through watery elements
washed, drowned in apocalyptic fear.
Too soon to say, know, fathom
how to remake a world, create an idea
with others from broken pieces,
fractured remains of the dark day –
now the day after.
Time and rain are tools we have
things we will need to begin.

Portland, Oregon – November 9, 2016

The day following the horrible, terrible, no good, bad day in America.

  1. Hey Tom, thanks for your heartfelt poetry. As I got to the bottom of your site, there’s an ad for lawyers or doctors. This beautiful photo graph of my home the last 16 years just off to the left of the pic. The fog barreling over the coastal ridge is a harbinger of comfort and a future of sparkling skies as the fog whisks away sediments hanging in the air. So grateful for your FB friendship and the beauty and wisdom you bring to FB.

    • Patty: I’m very glad you enjoy my writing. The blog has been a terrific incentive for me to write, something I’ve done for many years, but only sporadically. Also, I’ve never seen an ad, probably because I don’t get much traffic, which is OK. So, I can’t see the photo you are referring to. I’ll keep looking. I don’t usually put my stuff directly to FB, but I thought this one was timely. The creative endeavor helps in troubled times!

    • Thanks, Kathy. This too shall pass, right? I was thinking how much we need to hold tight to family, friends, neighbors, communities right now. Take care!

  2. Hi Tom, we couldn’t even sleep last night we were so shocked. I just read here tonight that Hillary did win the popular vote but the electoral vote went to him! Grrr And this morning, his manager said they knew 2 weeks ago that he’d win…or they thought so…if so why then did he keep harping about this election being rigged…and that he knew it was? Kinda looks now like he might have finally said something that was true!!! I think there should have been a recount in some of those states. All that time, she was way out ahead of him, only to lose at the end? I still do not believe it!

    • Hi, Ginny – dear cousin. Yea, it’s a tough one. As I tried to say in my poem, I need time right now – for grieving. Our country is at a true turning point. Our collective decisions going forward can’t be based on anger, recrimination, vindictiveness. But rather, on care, loving kindness, tolerance, and a fierce will to strive for true justice and peace.
